Importing Sarees from India to the USA — What Actually Sells and How to Buy It
A saree counter in a Bay Area store sells three sarees a week in February and three a day in the Diwali run-up. Every question worth answering about importing sarees into the US comes back to that difference. The product knowledge matters, but the calendar pays the bills.
What actually sells in a US saree store
Party wear leads. Georgette and chiffon with sequins or stone work, reception-weight and photographable, sells all year and spikes in December. Soft silks move steadily into temple events and community gatherings. Banarasi and Kanjivaram carry the wedding trade, and here is where you should understand the supply map plainly: Surat is the synthetics, print and finishing engine, while pure Banarasi comes off Varanasi looms and Kanjivaram from Kanchipuram weavers. We consolidate those weaving-cluster lines alongside our own production so a US buyer gets one shipment instead of three. It works, but it is a consolidation service, not a magic loom.
Cotton and linen sarees sell as daily and office wear, and printed georgette picks up the younger walk-in trade. One category note our US buyers repeat every season: the fastest-growing line on their floor is the ready-to-wear, pre-draped saree. First-time saree wearers, college students, and non-Indian customers buying for South Asian weddings all land on that rail because it removes the draping barrier.

Pure silk, art silk and the label question
"Art silk" means artificial silk, which in practice is viscose rayon. On the customs line it is a man-made fibre, not silk: different heading, different duty treatment, different conversation with your broker. Your customer reads art silk as a silk-family product; your HS code says otherwise. Keep your tags honest and your classification correct, and you avoid trouble at both ends.
Restock speed differs too, and this is the honest admission most guides skip. A Surat art-silk or printed line restocks in weeks. A Kanjivaram on a handloom takes weeks of weaving per piece, and no amount of WhatsApp pressure changes that. Order pure silk 90 to 120 days out and plan restocks around weaving cycles, not container schedules. If a supplier promises handloom silk at catalogue speed, that is a promise about something else entirely.
Lengths, blouses and the details that prevent returns
Know exactly what you are buying in length. A 5.5 metre saree is a drape-only product; a 6.3 metre piece includes the blouse piece in the running length. A customer who assumed the blouse piece and did not get one will not forgive the omission, and neither will her daughter. Readymade blouse programmes and petticoats raise the attach rate on every saree you sell; we do fall-pico and finishing in Surat so pieces arrive shelf-ready rather than workshop-ready.
Readymade blouses deserve their own line on the order form. They run on a different size curve than the saree customer expects, cup depth and back style vary by design, and a blouse rail with three back styles (plain, keyhole, tie-back) covers most walk-ins. Our buyers who carry readymade blouses report the attach climbs when the rail sits beside the till rather than the saree wall, because the add-on decision happens at payment.
Zari is the other silent issue. Real metal zari tarnishes in humidity, so during the June to September monsoon dispatches we pack zari-heavy sarees with butter paper and silica gel. Ask any supplier what their monsoon packing protocol is before you order. A shrug on that question is information.
The freight maths people do not expect
Sarees are light and dense. A standard folded saree carton carries around 100 pieces with modest cube, so value per CBM is among the best of any category we ship to the US. LCL works beautifully here, and mixing sarees with blouses, petticoats and kurtis in a single drop is standard practice among our buyers. West Coast transit runs around three weeks port to port from Nhava Sheva or Mundra; East Coast runs four-plus; six to eight weeks door to door is the safe planning number. Air freight makes sense as an in-season refill for wedding bestsellers, and almost never as a first-order habit.
One consolidation habit worth copying from experienced buyers: stage orders around the wedding calendar even when the sarees themselves are not bridal. Silk-cotton and soft-silk walls feed the wedding-guest trade, and a shipment that lands in April is selling into bookings made in March. The saree you import in April sells to a wedding guest in June; the same saree imported in June sells at markdown.
The US saree calendar
The dates differ from the kurti calendar in useful ways:
Wedding season (May to September): silk and Banarasi orders placed January to March, when brides lock their dates and mothers start shopping.
Diwali (October or November): everything sells. Dispatch by end of July.
December holiday parties: the sequinned georgette spike. This window surprises first-timers because a large share of buyers are non-Indian party customers.
Navratri (September or October): lightweight festive sarees for the aunties who dance too.
Pongal and Thai windows (January to February): soft silks and cottons in metros with southern Indian communities.
Temple calendars: kumbhabhishekam consecrations and annual brahmotsavam festivals trigger bulk silk purchases in specific communities. Watch the temple announcement boards in New Jersey, the Bay Area, Texas and Chicago; those weekends can clear an entire silk wall.
Checking silk before you pay the balance
Weigh the saree against its stated weight; a kitchen scale handles a whole saree fine, and a big miss is a big clue. Run a zari rub test with a damp white cloth. Fold the piece and check body-border alignment along the selvedge. There is also the old shop-floor method that still settles arguments: tailors burn a single pulled thread at the fall edge. Silk smells of burnt hair and leaves a crushable ash; viscose burns fast like paper. Destructive, tiny, decisive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for sarees from India?
Saree minimums run per design in fabric lengths, generally in the dozens, and they sit lower than stitched-garment minimums because there is no size grading in the product. Mixing printed, art-silk and party lines in one LCL shipment is how most first orders are structured.
What sells best to non-Indian customers?
Pre-draped and ready-to-wear sarees, lightweight printed pieces, and jewel-tone party sarees. They show up for festival-market stalls, themed weddings and holiday gifting, and they buy when the garment removes the skill barrier.
Is art silk treated the same as real silk for US customs?
No. Art silk is viscose rayon, a man-made fibre, and it classifies differently from natural silk with different duty treatment. State fibre content accurately on paperwork and tags, and settle classification with your broker before ordering.
How long does shipping take from India to the USA?
Sea freight runs three to five weeks port to port depending on coast, with six to eight weeks a realistic door-to-door plan once customs and inland are included. Air freight takes three to five days and is best kept for in-season refills.
Do sarees come with blouse pieces?
It depends on the line, and you must specify. Some run 5.5 metres drape-only, others 6.3 metres with blouse piece included. Readymade blouse and petticoat programmes are the standard attach-rate builders, and we can pack them into the same carton.
How should I store zari-heavy sarees in-store?
Folded in muslin or butter paper, away from sealed humid storage, with silica packets for long holds. Zari dislikes damp and hates being crushed, so heavy pieces never hang on a rail for months.
