Thobe Fabric for Saudi Arabia — Weights, Whites and the Tolerances That Matter
Twenty thobes were already cut when the factory manager in Jeddah noticed it: a faint line at the shoulder seam where the sleeve panel met the body, visible only under the showroom's cool-white lights. The sleeves had come from a different dye lot than the bodies. Nothing was wrong with either lot. That is the part nobody believes until it happens to them: two perfect whites, one unusable garment.
What a thobe actually demands from fabric
A Saudi thobe looks like the simplest garment in the world, which is exactly why the fabric tolerances are so tight. There is no print, no colour, no embroidery to hide behind. The cloth has to be opaque, matte rather than shiny, fine in hand, and stable enough to survive laundering, starching and hot pressing week after week.
The standard base is polyester-viscose poplin, roughly 110 to 130 GSM for everyday wear. Poly-cotton serves the budget end of the market. Fine cotton-rich poplin sits at the top, chosen by buyers who want breathability and accept a shorter garment life under commercial laundering. Winter runs move to brushed finishes and heavier weights, 150 to 180 GSM, and some houses use a lightly textured base that the trade calls Saudi crepe.

Two practical details matter more than most spec sheets mention. First, width: thobe cloth must come in 58 to 60 inch width so the sleeve and body panels cut in one piece. A 44 inch width forces a sleeve seam, and a visible sleeve seam reads as a budget garment in Riyadh. Second, the sleeve crease: Saudi customers iron a sharp crease down the sleeve, so the fabric needs to take and hold a press without going shiny.
Consumption and sizing habits
One thobe consumes about 3 to 3.5 metres at 60 inch width. Sizes run primarily on length grading, usually 52 through 60 on most size runs, with the collar measured separately. A factory cuts hundreds of panels from a single lot in a day, which is why lot discipline, discussed below, is the whole game.
Whites: there is more than one white
Optical white, the blue-toned bleached white, is the default for formal thobes. Soft or milk white, slightly warmer, sells well in winter lines and among customers who find optical white harsh against the skin. Neither is right or wrong. What is wrong is supplying three lots that each read a different white in the same shipment.
The test that separates serious suppliers from casual ones is the polybag test. White polyester and poly-cotton can yellow in storage from phenolic yellowing, a reaction between heat and antioxidants used in some polyethylene bags. Fabric that leaves Surat perfectly white can arrive in Jeddah with a faint yellow cast if it has spent five weeks sealed in the wrong bag in a hot container. Before any bulk white programme, seal a swatch inside the actual polybag and leave it in a hot place for 48 hours, then compare it against a fresh cutting. Ask your supplier to use anti-yellowing packaging and keep cartons ventilated. This one habit has saved our buyers more claims than any other single check.
The tolerances that keep a Saudi factory happy
Write these into the purchase order, because a Saudi quality manager will assume them even if you never discussed them:
Shrinkage under two percent after three washes at 40 degrees. Thobes are laundered and pressed constantly, and shrinkage twists the placket first.
GSM within about five percent of the agreed weight, verified per lot, not per shipment.
Width within one centimetre of nominal across the roll, since cutting markers are planned to the inch.
Skew or bias under one percent, because a twisted grain shows in the side seam of a white garment under showroom lighting.
Roll length accuracy. A roll ticketed 100 metres that measures 97 breaks a cutting plan the same way a short shipment does.
For fabric fault levels, the four-point system is the reference most mills and buyers use, and it gives you a common language for accepting or rejecting a roll instead of arguing in adjectives.
Saber, ports and clearance into the Kingdom
Saudi Arabia runs conformity control through the Saber platform under SASO, the Saudi standards authority. Textiles need a product certificate and a shipment certificate before customs release. The certificate follows the product, so a supplier who has already registered a fabric programme clears in days while a first-timer discovers weeks of delay. Build Saber into the timeline rather than treating it as a courier formality, and confirm labelling requirements in Arabic for your specific product line early.
On routing, Jeddah Islamic Port serves the west coast and the Makkah region, while King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam serves the east. Goods for Riyadh move inland by truck or rail after clearance at either coast. Sea transit from Nhava Sheva runs about a week to ten days to Jeddah. Clearance itself takes three to seven days when Saber paperwork is clean, and much longer when it is not.
One duty note worth having in your landed-cost sheet: the Kingdom applies the five percent GCC customs duty, and its VAT has stood at fifteen percent for several years now. Importers recover VAT through the offset mechanism when they are registered, but the cash-flow room still has to exist.
The calendar: white for Eid
The Saudi thobe trade has one overwhelming peak: Ramadan into Eid al-Fitr, when a huge share of male customers buy new white thobes for Eid prayers. The second windows are Saudi National Day on 23 September and the back-to-school rush in August, when boys' thobe cloth moves in volume alongside school uniforms.
Work backwards from the calendar. For an Eid in late March, a factory wants fabric landed by late January, which means shipping from India in the first half of January at the latest, and booking production in November. Eid shifts roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, so last season's dates will mislead you this season. Keep a Hijri calendar on the buying desk, not just a Gregorian one.
An honest admission from our side of the desk: whites are the hardest thing to dye during the Surat monsoon, from late June into September, when humidity slows the processing houses and delivery timelines stretch by a week or two. We plan white programmes around it. If your supplier tells you a July white order needs extra time, they are being straight with you, not making excuses.
Frequently Asked Questions
What fabric is used for Saudi thobes?
Polyester-viscose poplin is the everyday standard, with poly-cotton at the budget end, fine cotton-rich poplin at the premium end, and brushed or textured bases for winter. The constant requirements are opacity, a matte face, good press retention and 58 to 60 inch width.
What GSM is thobe fabric?
Everyday thobe cloth runs roughly 110 to 130 GSM. Summer weights drop to 90 to 110 for breathability, and winter weights go up to 150 to 180. The exact weight matters less than staying consistent across lots, since customers replace thobes one at a time and notice differences.
Why does white fabric turn yellow in storage?
Phenolic yellowing, a reaction between heat and additives in some plastic bags, is the usual culprit on white polyester and blends. Anti-yellowing polybags, ventilated cartons and a 48-hour heat test on a bagged swatch before bulk will catch the problem before it ships.
Do I need Saber certification to export fabric to Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Textiles fall under SASO conformity, managed through the Saber platform, with a product certificate and a per-shipment certificate. Get the product certificate in place before your first bulk order so clearance does not become the longest part of your timeline.
How many metres of fabric are in one thobe?
About 3 to 3.5 metres at 60 inch width, depending on length grading and sleeve style. Factories plan cutting markers to the roll, so roll length accuracy matters as much as the price of the metre.
How is a Kuwaiti or Bahraini dishdasha fabric different from Saudi thobe fabric?
The base cloth is the same family of white poplins, but cuts and collars differ by country, and Gulf tailors outside Saudi often take finer, slimmer-cut preferences. The fabric rules stay the same: one white, one lot, one width.
If you supply thobe factories or tailoring houses in the Kingdom, tell us the weight, width and white standard you currently run, and we will send lot-dyed swatches with shade continuity cards for serious buyers. We would rather spend a week getting your white right than a month arguing about the one that was not.
